Terunyan Village, Bali
Indonesia

This was taken in a small village in central Bali located on Lake Batur, the crater of an old volcano. The religon practiced is Hinduism, but the people don't believe in cremation. The bodies of the dead are laid out in open graves under the Teru Minyan tree, which only exists in two places in Bali. The tree's enzymes neutralize the smell of rotting flesh. After the 11 graves are full, the last grave is emptied to make space for a new body. The bones are thrown onto a pile and the skulls laid out like these...

this is a really good photo. I love the black and white - it really makes this work.
I'm glad to see you steared clear of taking "pritty" pictures.
nice work

The story itself was fascinating, and the picture is even better. The contrast between the skulls and their the teeth with the leafy and stone ground is excellent.
The teeth really stand out -- the center skull looks almost as if he's laughing.

Very creepy and nice, like the gritty and contrasty feel here. My only critique would be that when the eyes go in, they start at the skulls because they're low in the frame, while keeping them high in the frame might create even more tension. But great shot :)
